Article Series: Know Your Fertilizer Rights

During 2009, a series of articles under the theme of "Know Your Fertilizer Rights" appeared in Crops & Soils magazine, a publication of the American Society of Agronomy. The articles focused on the concepts behind fertilizer best management practices and increasing understanding of 4R nutrient stewardship. The 4Rs refer to using the right fertilizer source, at the right rate, right time, and right place.

The articles were authored by scientific staff of IPNI in cooperation with university and industry colleagues. The Fertilizer Institute and the Canadian Fertilizer Institute sponsored the series. The primary audience of the publication is Certified Crop Advisers (CCAs). Each article is board-approved for self-study and is accompanied by a quiz, so CCAs may earn continuing education units (CEUs).

Posted below are PDF files of each of the articles in the series to date. The first article covers the general concept of 4R nutrient stewardship and explains how the "four rights" are linked in achieving fertilizer best management practices. The second article takes a closer look at source considerations, the third covers rate, the fourth has a focus on timing, and the fifth article is on fertilizer placement.
